I'm thrilled to announce that my video performance of "To Love a Hero" feat. the Virginian Quartet is out now.
When I decided to enter the 2024 NPR Tiny Desk Contest, there was only one song, and only one version of it, in my mind. I wanted to turn the cello part in "To Love a Hero" into a full string quartet, and I wanted to do it with the Virginian Quartet.
Alan Gao, Andrew Kopca, Sydney McKenna, and Rosalind Reischer have been playing together for years in the D.C. area. I've been fortunate enough to attend several of their performances and to have Alan's talents on bass and violin for the album release show. To be honest with you, I arranged the entire piece with them in mind—before I knew they'd say yes. So when Alan and I pitched it, and they were completely game, it was such a relief. And y'all, I am telling you, we took this song to a whole 'nother level.
There will be some sort of audience voting portion of the Tiny Desk Contest this year, so I'll be back in your inboxes later. For now, all I want to say is thank you to the members of the Virginian Quartet, and to my favorite guitarist Will Sullivan, for joining me on this one. And thank YOU for watching, and for streaming, and for anything you do to support my music.
Love, and all the rest,
Mindiya
